How to win with (K+Q vs K+P) while Pawn is on the 7th rank ?

So, In this Blog, we will mostly cover how to win with the 7th rank. So, the 7th rank pawn topic is divided into 3 parts :

1st part: while 7th rank pawn is a knight or central pawn on the seventh rank.
2nd part: when there is a Bishop pawn on the 7th rank.
3rd Part: When there is a Rook pawn on the 7th rank.

General Point:    Queen vs Pawn endgame rules

1) The person having King and Queen is an attacker and the person having King and Pawn is the Defender.

In the Knight and centre pawn, the defender has no chance to draw the game until the attacker makes the silly mistake.

2) Whereas in the rook and Bishop defender has Equal chance of drawing the game.

1st part: while 7th rank Pawn is a Knight or Central pawn on the seventh rank.

General rule for Knight and Centre pawn on the 7th rank:

     a) Give continuous Check to the King.
     b) When King and Pawn get disconnected, then attack the pawn with the help of Queen.
     c) Move your King towards defender Pawn, when defender Pawn blocked by his own King.

So, as per our rule, we will give a continuous check to the defender King along with we will move our king near to Defender king. And as the defender block his own pawn then we will move our king near to defender king and pawn.

1.  Qd4+ Kc2

As the Defender King and Pawn are disconnected. So, we will follow rule 2, here we will attack the pawn.

2. Qe3 Kd1 3.Qd3+ Ke1 4. Ke7

Now here as the Defender King block his own pawn. So, we will move our King near to defender King and this procedure will follow until the attacker king reaches the 6th rank near the defender Pawn and finishes the game.

4… Kf2 5. Qd2 Kf1 6. Qf4+ Kg2 7.Qe3 Kf1 8.Qf3+ Ke1 9. Ke6 Kd1 10. Qf3 Kd2 11. Qf1 Kd1 12. Qd4+ Kc2 13. Qe3 Kd1 14.Qd3+ Ke1 15. Kd5 Kf2 16.Qd2 Kf1 17. Qf4+ Kf1 18. Kd4 Kd1 19.Qf3 Kd2 20.Qd3+ Ke1 21. Ke3 Kf1 22.Kf3 Kg1 23.Qe2 Kh1 24.Qg4+#

2nd part: when there is a Bishop pawn on the 7th rank.

The general rule or we can short cut trick how to deal with Bishop Pawn. So, we classified them as winning zones for attackers.

                       a) Bishop Pawn -5433 (When King on Right Side )
                       b) Bishop Pawn -7544 (When King on the Wrong Side)

Now the question arises?? which is the right side or which is the wrong side ??
So here is the answer with beautiful Pictorial explanations !!

a) When King is on the right side- when King is near to the corner .So, we should follow the winning zones number is 5433.

So, from the corner Square side of the pawn, Always we start from horizontally first, we need to count till 5 Squares Horizontally (a1-e1) and we will count 4 squares vertically (a1-a4). Now as we know the winning zones are 5433, so 54 is done So from e1 square we will count 3 squares vertically (e1-e3), and from a5 square, we will count 3 squares horizontally (a4-c4). So, this is the wining zones look like:

When King is outside the winning zone.

Example :
When King is inside the winning zone.

  1.Qb8+ Ka1 2.Kb3 1-0

a) When King is on the wrong side- when King is near to the e1 square. So, we should follow the winning zones number is 7544.

So, from the corner Square side of the pawn, Always we start from horizontally first, we need to count till 7 Squares Horizontally (a1-g1) and vertically we will count 5 squares i.e (a1-a5). Now as we know the winning zones are 7544, so 55 is done So from e1 square we will count 4 squares vertically (g1-g4), and from a5 square, we will count 4 squares horizontally (a4-c4). So, this is the wining zones look like:

Fig. 1 King is outside the winning zone .so its a draw.

Fig.2 King is outside the winning zone.

In fig.2 King is outside winning but black has only one to defend this position i.e Kc3 otherwise its a winning for black i.e suppose black plays 1..Kd1 2. Kd4 c1= Q 3. Kd3 and now its become zugzwang for black.

Fig.3 When King is inside the Winning zone.

In this Positon, we need to avoid unnecessary checks, otherwise, we will not able to win(the game will be ended in a draw), this position as if we play 1.Qd4+ Kc1 2. Qe3+ Kb1 and the now white king is out of winning zone numbers.

Here the perfect way to playing move is - 1. Qd4+ Kc1 2. Qa1+ Kd2 3. Qb2 Kd1 (3... Kd3 4. Qc1) 4. Kf2 c1=Q 5. Qe2+#

3rd Part: When there is a Rook pawn on the 7th rank.

Most of the players think rook file pawn on h7 is drawn but there some zones which give queen side chance to win this game. So here we will teach you how to win that situation in a simpler manner.

Firstly which is the winning zones number for h7 pawn - 5544

So, from corner Square side of the pawn, Always we start from horizontally first, we need to count till 5 Squares Horizontally (a1-e1) as well as vertically (a1-a5). Now as we know the winning zones are 5544, so 55 is done So from e1 square we will count 4 squares vertically (e1-e4), and from a5 square, we will count 4 squares horizontally (a5-d5). So, this is the wining zones look like:

Here King is outside the zone, so its a draw.

Let's do an example when the king is inside the winning zone numbers:

Here King is inside the winning zone.

                   1.Qg1+ Kg7 2.Qf2 Kb1 3. Qe1 Kb2 4. Qd2+ Kb1 5. Kb3 a1= Q 6. Qc2+#
